Providing anesthesiology for liver surgery and especially liver transplantation is highly complex and requires profound expertise in the physiology and pathophysiology of liver disease. This new edition incorporates the latest information in the field and remains the only available book on the topic. It focuses on the practical aspect of liver anesthesiology and critical care, while providing a comprehensive and in depth summary of the knowledge in this field. Most liver transplant centers now have dedicated teams providing anesthesia care during liver transplantations. In the last years there has been a substantial increase in knowledge and improvement in techniques in anesthesiology and critical care of patients undergoing liver surgery and transplant patients.Liver Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, 2nd Edition includes new chapters on chronic liver failure and hepatic cirrhosis, preoperative risk assessment, evidence in liver anesthesiology, the splanchnic and systemic circulation in liver disease and a special focus on analgesia for liver resection including regional techniques. Written for anesthesiologists and critical care physicians caring for patients undergoing liver surgery and transplantation, this book proves to be an essential companion and review book as the number of liver surgeries with higher complexity continue to increase.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) has become an important public health problem all over the Globe. As per the International Diabetes Federation Atlas (IDFA) for 2015, about 69 million people in India and over 415 million people across the globe are suffering from diabetes. The diabetic patients are predisposed to higher rates of kidney stone formation which is a risk factor. The Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease that causes renal failure in diabetic patient. The Diabetes mellitus is the common cause of end stage renal disease (ESRD). The control of diabetes and early treatment for the risk factors of diabetes are very important in preventing nephropathy. The use of medicinal plants reduce nephropathy in diabetic patients. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a non-curable disease. But early detection and diagnosis and subsequent dietary restrictions, regular follow up and proper treatment will slow down its progression and may potentially postpone imminent requirement of dialysis or kidney transplantation. Yoga keeps the internal organs healthy and balance various systems in the body and helps in improving the health of kidneys.

Developing countries are undergoing a rapid epidemiological transition - from infectious diseases such as diarrhoea and pneumonia to chronic ones such as heart disease, liver disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis etc - that threatens to overwhelm their strapped health systems and cripple their fragile economies (Heidi Worley, 2006). Chronic conditions and diseases are leading cause of mortality and morbidity, accounting for 60% of total premature deaths all over world out of which 53% is in India (WHO). Liver disease represents a major problem for the health care systems and of course, for the patients. Especially chronic liver disease is a growing problem. One third of the world's total population (2 billion) has been infected with hepatitis B virus of whom more than 350 million people (perhaps 400 million) are inflicted by chronic HBV and about 170 million by hepatitis C. 20% of those patients with chronic liver diseases from viral hepatitis might develop a liver cirrhosis which might end in the need of a liver transplantation.

This outstanding volume in the Essentials in Ophthalmology series presents recent developments in the diagnosis and treatment of corneal disease. Its intention is not to replace the relevant textbooks, but to serve as a bridge between primary and tertiary literature. This well-structured volume covers the following main topics: Herpes simplex keratitis. -Amniotic membrane transplantation for the treatment of corneal ulceration in infectious keratitis. -Chlamydial infection. -Chronic blepharitis. -New aspects on the pathogenesis of conjunctival melanoma. -Confocal microscopy of malignant tumors of the ocular surface. -Management of ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid. -Classification of corneal dystrophies on a molecular genetic basis. -Phototherapeutic keratectomy in corneal dystrophies. -Fuchs endothelial dystrophy. -The topical nerve growth factor in the treatment of severe surface disorders. -The intracorneal ring for penetrating keratoplasty. -Developments in corneal preservation. -Corneal substitutes for transplantation. All topics have direct clinical importance and will not only keep ophthalmologists up to date, but will inform them of how to treat their cornea patients with optimal diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

The Immunological Barriers to Regenerative Medi...

This volume offers an analysis of the scale and nature of the immunological issues facing regenerative medicine, drawing on the expertise of laboratories around the world who have taken up the challenge of applying their expertise in immunology to the vagaries of stem cell biology. In Part I, we explore the extent to which the principles of allograft rejection, learned over several decades from our experiences of whole organ transplantation, apply within the unique context of cell replacement therapy. Part II discusses various innovative ways of addressing the issues of immunogenicity, while, in Part III, we focus exclusively on the induction of immunological tolerance through a variety of novel approaches. It is our hope that this systematic analysis of the current state of the field will galvanise efforts to solve an issue which has so far remained intractable. Recent years have witnessed numerous advances in stem cell research that have suggested novel strategies for the treatment of the chronic and regenerative diseases that pose a growing challenge to the provision of healthcare in the 21st century. Nevertheless, there is little doubt that related disciplines have failed to keep pace with such developments, of which the immunology of transplant rejection is perhaps the most relevant to the nascent field of regenerative medicine. Indeed, given that after decades of research into the mechanisms of organ allograft rejection, we remain wholly dependent on immune suppression to ensure acceptance of foreign tissues, we might legitimately ask whether there is any reason why tissues differentiated from stem cells might not suffer the same fate. This volume seeks to address this issue by drawing on the principles of alloantigen recognition to assess the validity of early convictions that embryonic stem cell-derived tissues may prove invisible to the immune system of the host and the more recent belief that induced pluripotent stem cells, derived in a fully autologous manner, will circumvent the issue of immunogenicity. Having debunked such assumptions and established the magnitude of the immunological barriers to be overcome, this book then draws on the expertise of internationally-recognised laboratories around the world to provide a critical assessment of the likely success of applying strategies such as stem cell banking, silencing of genes that confer immunogenicity, and the induction of transplantation tolerance to overcoming the immunological barriers in the future. Indeed, it is only through reaching a consensus in the field that enduring solutions to such an intractable problem may ultimately emerge.

Current Perspectives in Kidney Diseases

After years of stagnation, much has been happening in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases. This book contains a comprehensive review of the main developments in AKI, CKD, hemodialysis and kidney transplantation. The section on AKI deals with the key innovations in extracorporeal technologies. The section on nephrology and CKD concentrates on mineral metabolism alterations, restenosis in hemodialytic fistulas, mycophenolate mofetil as an alternative treatment for IgA nephropathy, and the genetics and progression of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease. The part on hemodialysis includes contributions on expanded hemodialysis, potassium profiling and home hemodialysis. Chapters on the treatment of acute antibody-mediated rejection after transplantation, pathogenesis and therapy of chronic allograft injury, and non-invasive surrogate biomarkers of acute rejection round out the subjects covered. Due to the wide variety of topics included in each section, this book is not only of interest to nephrologists, but also to professionals from related fields.
